The hazards to the health of pet dogs are rather different in Mediterranean coastal areas of Spain from those which are common in northern Europe, a fact which often catches expat dog lovers unawares until their faithful companions are affected, and one of the conditions which it is most important for them to be aware of is canine leishmaniasis, a serious threat to dogs in not only the Region of Murcia but also right along the Mediterranean coastline, one which expat owners are often insufficiently informed about. Canine leishmaniasis (also referred to as leishmaniosis) is a potentially fatal insect-transmitted disease caused by a single-celled parasite which is transmitted by the bites of sand flies and most commonly affects dogs in Spain although cats and humans can also be susceptible. The disease is often fatal in unprotected dogs which do not receive rapid treatment. The whole of the parasite’s life cycle takes place inside the insects which act as carriers, and these insects are the only means by which the disease of leishmaniasis is transmitted from a sick dog to a healthy one, or to a human. The disease is widespread all around the Mediterranean, and in Spain is especia...

NFC Personalizes Ice Bottle to Reduce Waste – 2020-02-12 – Page 1

U.K.- and U.S.-based water-filtration technology company Pure Hydration plans to reduce the environmental impact of disposable plastic water bottles. Its stainless steel product, known as the Ice Bottle, can filter water and is intended to be used and re-used anywhere throughout the world where tap water is available, ensuring access to safe drinking water while reducing the use of plastic bottles. The solution goes beyond a simple re-fillable filtering bottle, however. To help a user track his or her own role in reducing water bottle waste, find the nearest refill area or engage with a larger community using the bottles, the technology also offers intelligence. That’s where the Smart Cosmos software platform comes in. Smart Cosmos provides cloud-based data, the company reports, and based on Near Field Communication (NFC) tag reads. Recently, Grant began looking at designing filtration technology for everyday use, with a goal of reducing plastic waste. “He became passionate about bringing that same technology to the consumer world and trying to drastically reduce, if not eliminate, the use of single-use plastic water bottles,” says Joyce Andrews, Pure Hydration...

Chinese turn to social media to feed stranded pets in virus city

China’s unprecedented quarantining of virus-hit Wuhan has separated millions from their families — and many from their pets, prompting worried owners and kind strangers to take to social media to ensure left-behind animals are looked after. The virus that has killed more than 360 in China emerged during the Lunar New Year when hundreds of millions were travelling across the country, and the subsequent lockdown on Wuhan and central Hubei province has left many stranded. The hashtag “save the pets left behind in Wuhan” became the third-most searched term on the Twitter-like Weibo platform Monday, receiving millions of views from those unable to return to the city, where the virus is believed to have originated, and others willing to help. On Monday, he used the hashtag to post the happy news he had found a “young man” who had agreed to go and feed his cat Maomao. “In the video chat, after the man opened the door Maomao meowed so miserably, no one has been home for more than a dozen days̷...

Juul bought ads on CartoonNetwork.com, NickJr.com, other kid sites, suit says

Popular e-cigarette maker Juul intentionally and egregiously tailored its marketing to appeal to underage youth, according to a lawsuit filed by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey on February 12. The lawsuit lands as public health officials across the nation are still grappling with an explosion in e-cigarette use by youth, which the Food and Drug Administration has referred to as an “epidemic.” Between 2011 and 2019, recent use of e-cigarettes by middle schoolers increased from 0.6 percent to 10.5 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For high schoolers, use increased from 1.5 percent to 27.5 percent in that timeframe. That means that by 2019, more than 1 in every 4 high school students said they had used e-cigarettes within the last 30-days from the time of the survey. Overall, 5.4 million middle and high school students reported use of e-cigarettes in 2019, a leap up from 3.6 million in 2018, according to the CDC. While there were several e-cigarette makers with questionable appeal to youth, Juul has drawn the fiercest criticism—and several other state lawsuits. Juul is by far the leading brand of e-cigarettes in the US and clearly has...
